An interesting document from 19 April 1895, the "Incoming Passenger List" from Southhampton (The National Archives of the UK; Kew, Surrey, England; Board of Trade: Commercial and Statistical Department and successors: Inwards Passenger Lists.; Class: BT26; Piece: 78; Item: 71).
We can see Mabel Tolkien ("Tolkin") aged 25 and her two children aged four and two. Funny thing that John Ronald Reuel Tolkien is here described as a little girl. They embarked on the steamer Guelph at Cape Town. This event is well described in Scull & Hammond, The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide, Chronology, p. 3.
