27 New Street (Bedford Street), Covent Garden
First London Address of D. G. Tolkien (1786)

The London Directory (1786) just discovered by me shows the earliest known address of Daniel Gottlieb Tolkien in London. He was then a furrier at 27 New Street, Covent Garden. Now the street is called New Row. Daniel lived close to the Savoy Lutheran Chapel. Looking at the street map (see below) we can assume that 27 New Street may be the same address as Bedford Street from the documents from 1794. In fact the No. 27 lays between New Row and Bedford Street. During my next visit in London I will explore these narrow rows.

New Street, Covent Garden, Westminster (c.1720)
