»My mind is clear as crystal because it feels sure

From the Tolkien family papers [1/29(2); 2/4(9) – refered to in J.R.R. Tolkien. Life and Legend, 1992, p. 12].
Book of prayers of Mabel Tolkien

In spring 1900 Mabel Tolkien and her sister, May Incledon began taking instruction in the Roman Catholic faith. It was a move that was to estrange Mabel from her family and cause her and her children much hardship when the Baptist Tolkiens and the Methodist/Unitarian Suffields withdrew their financial and emotional support. This is a letter from May to Mabel:
»Dear old Darling,

I did try to say my prayers, and it came to me absolutely certainly that I must obey my conscience come what may, and I feel sure we are right to do this... Oh Pet my heart feels like a huge cabbage – does yours? But my mind is clear as crystal & happy because it feels sure
They were received into the Catholic Church in June 1900, although May's husband subsequently forbade her to attend church services. May then turned to spiritualism for comfort. What would happen to little J.R.R. Tolkien's catholicism if his dad still lived?

Wiosną roku 1900 Mabel Tolkien i jej siostra, May Incledon, rozpoczęły swoje nauki i przygotowania do wstąpienia do Kościoła rzymsko-katolickiego. Ten ruch oddalił wkrótce Mabel i jej synów od rodziny i spowodował wiele cierpień, gdy Tolkienowie – baptyści oraz Suffieldowie – metodyści i unitarianie zaprzestali wspierać ją finansowo i uczuciowo. Oto list, który May wysłała do Mabel:
»Drogie moje Kochanie!

Siostry zostały przyjęte do Kościoła katolickiego w czerwcu 1900, choć mąż May stanowczo zakazał jej chodzenia na msze. May znalazła potem pociechę w spirytualizmie. Co stałoby się z katolicyzmem małego J.R.R. Tolkiena, gdyby żył jego tata?
