How I became Tolkien's translator

Polish team of translators of Tolkien from Zysk i S-ka publishers: from right Paulina Braiter, Agnieszka Sylwanowicz, Cezary Frąc & Ryszard Derdziński

Today I can openly announce that I have been included in the group of five translators approved by the Tolkien Estate to translate J. R. R. Tolkien's The Nature of Middle-earth and The History of Middle-earth into Polish for Zysk i S-ka publishers (I will be translating the volumes of The Lost Road and Sauron Defeated - my translation of The Nature of Middle-earth is ready). The translators are: Paulina Braiter, Agnieszka Sylwanowicz, Katarzyna Staniewska (poems), Cezary Frąc and me, Ryszard Derdziński.

Here is my Tolkien translator's portfolio that has been approved by the Tolkien Estate:

"Ryszard Derdziński (b. 1974), a politologist with love of history, J.R.R. Tolkien's writings and travels. An activist in the Polish Tolkien fandom since the 1990s (known as Galadhorn). Editor of the magazines Simbelmynë and Gwaihir, co-editor of Elendilion.pl and of other Tolkien-based websites. A specialist of the Tolkien linguistics (he even writes poetry in Tolkien’s Quenya and Sindarin) and a researcher of J.R.R. Tolkien's genealogy (see #TolkienAncestry), biography and philosophy.

He translated into Polish:

• J. R. R. Tolkien, Appendix D and E (in Polish edition of The Lord of the Rings by Muza Publishers, Poland)

• J. R. R. Tolkien, all Appendces and Index (in Polish edition of The Lord of the Rings by Amber Publishers, Poland)

• Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull, The Art of ‘The Hobbit’ by Amber Publishers, Poland

• Michael W. Perry, Untangling Tolkien. A Chronology and Commentary for „The Lord of the Rings” by Muza Publishers, Poland

• he was a Tolkienist consultant of some of the Polish translations of The Lord of the Rings movie books (eg. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Chronicles – Art & Design by Amber Publishers, Poland)

• he has also translated for the private use parts of The Peoples of Middle-earth (HoMe XII).

• He is also a translator of Ursula K. Le Guin and Ernest Th. Seton into Polish."

See Carl F. Hostetter and John Garth speaking in English!
