Petershagen where the Gdańsk Tolkiens lived was part of Gdańsk in Polish Prussia, part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narodów, which lasted in the years 1569–1795). The "London Brothers" or Daniel Tolkien and John Benjamin Tolkien were born in Petershagen under the rule of the Polish kings (two of them were in the same time the Electors of Saxony). The church books of St Salvator in Petershagen have very interesting initial pages with the ruling kings, main Gdańsk officials and the Lutheran leaders. Let us look at them:
Times of Augustus II, King of Poland etc. and Elector of Saxony – under him Daniel Gottlieb Tolkien was born in July 1746 |
Times of Augustus III, King of Poland etc. and Elector of Saxony – under him Johann Benjamin Tolkien was born in June 1752 |
Stanislaw II Augustus, King of Poland, etc. – under him the brothers emmigrated to London and their parents died |
